Community Concert When:
Sunday, May 8th at 4pm Cost: Free Denali Arts Council's
Music Academy String Program will present their traditional
spring concert. This is a performance by string players of all
ages. Desperate Measures, the beginning adult orchestra, and
the Rhythm and Red Shoes Orchestra will also perform several
pieces, one featuring flute solos. This is a free family
event. It is on Mother's Day so bring your moms, grandmothers,
aunts, and great grandmothers. For more information you may

Portrait of a Legend: Talkeetna's Cliff

memory of Cliff Hudson and as part of the Alaska Airmens
Memorial Day fly-in in honor of Cliff, DAC is showing the
film, Portrait of a
Legend: Talkeetna's Cliff Hudson. This is an hour long
movie produced by Stagg Productions. The
presentation "5 Things Not to Do" will be given by local
pilot Don Lee before the film. This free event

Saturday Art Show and Reception: "Rough" by Keren
Lowell When: Saturday, May

observance of fiber arts month, Keren Lowell exhibits Rough.
This fresh collection of work brings a non-traditional
sensibility to the world of textiles and fiber art. Lowell is
interested in both the vulnerability and ruggedness of cloth.
She uses rags, sacks, towels and vintage textiles in her work,
calling attention to their imperfections by felting, knitting,
stitching and weaving back into worn areas. Lowell teaches at
UAA in the art department and is the Fiber Program
Coordinator. She has lived in Alaska since 1994, teaching and
making art the whole time. Show will be on display at the
North Wall Gallery until early June. |

This Second
Saturday Talkeetna Artists Guild show will celebrate fiber art
techniques and styles. After the success of past years
focusing on fiber arts for the month of May, we would like to
continue with this tradition. Do you quilt, paint on silk,
felt, knit, crochet, batik, work with repurposed fiber
materials or any of the myriad practices that makes this such
a unique art form? Space is limited as the group show is
upstairs only. Contact DAC to sign up at emily@denaliartscouncil.org if you

concept is to test-drive plays for future productions, to read
some literature aloud to each other, and to keep theatre alive
and vital in Talkeetna. Denali Drama will provide Soup
and Bread for anyone who sticks around through the reading of
the first act (that includes readers). If you'd like to
read a part and have copy of the script early, call Joe Page
at 733-1060 or just drop by Sunday and be prepared to read on

Circus Camp: Spend Your Summer Clowning

child Circus Mites (ages
5&6): Mon-Sat June 20-25 9-11am, $20 per
child Due to the popularity of the program and
wanting to offer participants more time to learn circus arts,
Green Light Circus has extended their summer camp
to four weeks for kids ages 7 and up during the
month of June. Circus Mites is a program which offers the same
circus arts for a younger crowd ages 5 & 6. Circus Mites
classes are for one week only and participants will be in the
performances as well. All of the same favorites
will be offered to all ages such as aerial (Spanish Web
& trapeze), juggling, clowning, acrobatics, silks,
unicycles and maybe even a few surprises! Not
only is participating in circus practice fun, but it is
great exercise. These skills help teach concentration,
coordination and self esteem which follow youth well into

1st and closes April 30th.

Denali Arts Council
is organizing a new time for volunteers to get together the
last Wednesday of every month at the Sheldon Community Arts
Hangar to complete a variety of volunteer tasks. Duties depend
on the talent that takes part; however jobs can range from
administration and helping with mailings to set construction
and general repairs. Light refreshments and snacks will be
served. We thank all our volunteers! Please RSVP if you

Show and Reception: Down to Earth- from Rags to Rugs by Diane
Ziegner When:
Show will be on display at the North Wall Gallery until early

celebration of Earth Day month, Talkeetna Artists Guild
features local artist Diane Ziegner who weaves with repurposed
fabric to create her unique rag rugs. Diane began weaving in
the early 1980s while attending college in Maine. Several
years ago, she acquired a beautiful cherry floor loom and her
weaving energy was rekindled. She operates her business,
The Rugged Weaver, from her home studio in Talkeetna, Alaska.
Weaving with rags is a traditional art form that uses a weft
composed of recycled materials such as clothing, sheets,
curtains, etc. Diane aspires to create works that are
colorful and practical.
